Cathy Corison, Winemaker and Co-Founder at Corison Winery, (Napa Valley, USA)

Years In Industry:

45 (!). I arrived in the Napa Valley in June of 1975, two days after graduating from Pomona College with a degree in Biology, with a vague notion that I wanted to make world-class wine. I took a brief detour by UC Davis to earn a Master’s degree in Enology and have been making wine ever since, first for other people, including Chappellet Vineyard for a decade and later for myself, starting with the 1987 vintage.

My Biggest Challenge To Wellness:

Taking the time it takes to keep well and sane, as I find myself closer to 70 than 60 years old. I should spend upwards of three hours a day, which is difficult given that I grow the grapes, make the wine and run the winery. (I used to sell the wine but have a lot of competent help with that these days.) It takes at least that long - three hours - to dowse my supplements, meditate, do some yoga, get aerobic exercise and apply the sunscreen.

How I Keep It Together To Stay Well:

I eat whole, organic foods with a glass or two of red wine every day. I meditate most days, do yoga several times a week, and ride my bike (40 minutes round trip) though the vineyards to work. I see a physical therapist/healer a couple times a month. Ten years ago she cobbled me back together, without surgery, when a cyst at L4/L5 in my spine shut me down. The cyst was a bit like a callous, forming in response to misalignment. Using several modalities (classic physical therapy, herbs, energy work, Chinese medicine, homeopathy) she slowly straightened me out, providing space for the cyst. We’re hoping the cyst has dissolved by now as it no longer serves a function. Now she keeps me tuned up.

I also see an acupuncturist when I need it and regular massage is key. Having never been a great sleeper, I’ve worked very hard for several years now to get more and better sleep. Reading Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker changed my life. Sleep affects all aspects of our life including health. I go to bed earlier, giving myself more sleep opportunity, read every night until I fall asleep three times, take sleep-inducing herbs, end all screen time an hour before bed, block out light and sounds and I’m finally addressing sleep apnea.
